This is the first time that an Indigenous cultural expression has been recognized as a Memory of the World.<\/p>\n<\/external-link-icon><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"w-constrained richtext\"><external-link-icon>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recordings on Wax Cylinders<\/h2>\n<\/external-link-icon><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"w-constrained richtext\"><external-link-icon>\n<p>Station inspector Karl Tir\u00e9n made six journeys through the Swedish part of S\u00e1pmi. Equipped with the most advanced recording technology of the time \u2013 a phonograph and wax cylinders \u2013 he traveled to document and record the S\u00e1mi joik.<\/p>\n<\/external-link-icon><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"w-constrained richtext\"><external-link-icon>\n<p>Craftswoman Maria Persson-Johansson, herself a highly regarded joiker, became Tir\u00e9n\u2019s most important informant and guide into S\u00e1mi culture, which had previously been largely inaccessible to outsiders.<\/p>\n<\/external-link-icon><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"w-constrained richtext\"><external-link-icon>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">UNESCO\u2019s Memory of the World Programme<\/h2>\n<\/external-link-icon><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"w-constrained richtext\"><external-link-icon>\n<p>A <em>Memory of the World<\/em> designation is awarded to archives or libraries deemed to hold material of great value to humanity. Among other current Memory of the World entries are Astrid Lindgren\u2019s archive (National Library of Sweden), the Codex Argenteus (Uppsala University Library), and Dag Hammarskj\u00f6ld\u2019s collection (National Library of Sweden).<\/p>\n<\/external-link-icon><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"w-constrained richtext\"><external-link-icon>\n<p>UNESCO\u2019s <em>Memory of the World<\/em> programme is based on the belief that certain archives, collections, and works represent a shared heritage of humanity, much like the items listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
